From chef-prepared meals and fireside conversations to thoughtfully appointed overnight accommodations, the lodge experience is designed to feel welcoming, relaxed, and deeply personal from arrival to departure.
The vision behind Almost Heaven Plantation began with founder, Warren Hylton, whose attention to detail and appreciation for hospitality shaped the property into what it is today. He was known for jokingly saying, “It only costs 80% more to go first class,” and “If things go well this year, we’re going to put indoor plumbing in” – a lighthearted reflection of both his humor and his commitment to doing things the right way.
That philosophy can be felt throughout the plantation. Much of the wood featured across the property is cherry timber harvested from the family’s land in West Virginia – a meaningful way of bringing a touch of the Mountain State to the South Carolina Lowcountry. Every beam, finish, and detail was selected with intention.
Equally important was the touch of his wife, Ms. Patty, who personally decorated the property in its entirety. Every photograph, couch, table setting, and decorative piece was carefully chosen by her hand. Many of the furnishings and accents throughout the lodge are treasured family heirlooms, some dating back four generations. While guests may never know the story behind every piece, those who do are reminded that Almost Heaven is far more than simply a sporting property – it is a family dream built with extraordinary care, pride, and heart.
For overnight accommodations, The Plantation Inn features ten king-sized guest rooms, each with private ensuite bathrooms designed for comfort and relaxation. The Anglers Retreat offers an additional two king-sized bedrooms with a shared bath, overlooking the water and providing a quiet setting to unwind after a day outdoors.
The amount of heart poured into creating Almost Heaven Plantation is truly unmatched, and we are honored to continue sharing that experience with every guest who walks through our doors.

When most people think about a hunting guide, they often picture someone whose primary responsibility is finding birds. While that is certainly an important part of the job, the reality is that being a great guide involves far more than what happens during a few hours in the field.
Long before hunting season arrives, our guides are already hard at work preparing for your visit. Throughout the year, they spend countless hours learning the personalities and strengths of the dogs they work alongside, improving habitat conditions, maintaining equipment, cleaning hunt vehicles, attending guide meetings, and ensuring they have the proper gear and apparel needed to represent Almost Heaven Plantation with professionalism and pride.
A guide is also a steward of the property. They take the time to learn the history of the plantation, understand our conservation efforts, and share the story behind the land with guests who visit. Their role is to help connect guests not only with the hunt itself, but with the traditions, wildlife, and conservation practices that make the experience meaningful.
The qualities that make a truly exceptional guide often have little to do with birds at all. Personality, attentiveness, safety, professionalism, patience, and kindness are just as important as field knowledge. While every guide hopes for favorable conditions and plenty of bird encounters, there are days when weather, wind, or other factors simply do not cooperate. On those days, the guide is often working harder than ever to ensure guests still leave with lasting memories and a great experience.
Sometimes it is the small details that make the biggest impression. A clean hunt truck with dry seats on a dew-covered morning. Extra water, snacks, and refreshments tucked away for the day. Remembering that favorite diet soda you requested during your very first visit. Asking about your family members or pets by name. Making sure you have enough shells, the right equipment, and a hunting pace that matches your preferences—whether that means covering more ground or taking a slower approach to enjoy the scenery.
Great guides understand that every guest is different. They adapt the experience, keep the atmosphere welcoming and lighthearted, and work hard to ensure everyone in the group feels included and comfortable. Much of that effort goes unnoticed, but it is often what transforms a good hunt into a memorable one.
And when the day is over, the work is not.
Birds still need to be cleaned and prepared. Hunt vehicles need to be washed and restocked. Equipment must be organized. Dogs must be cared for. Plans for the following day’s guests need to be finalized. The preparation for tomorrow begins the moment today’s hunt ends.
